In a world that’s being reshaped by technology, hospitality has never been more needed.

Hospitality is not a fallback. It is not what you do while figuring out what you really want. It is a profession. And it is entering its golden era.

HOSPITALITY A Profession, Not An Industry is for everyone, from owners and general managers to kitchen porters and trainee baristas, and those considering hospitality as a career.

Written by Stefan Wissenbach, advisor to over 500 businesses and hotels, including some of the world's leading hospitality brands.

“This book is an essential read for anyone working in the ‘profession’.” Stuart Procter, CEO, The Beaumont Mayfair

My promise to you is that by the time you finish this book, you will see your work - and your potential within it - in an entirely new light.

The world is changing fast.

Hospitality is the profession built for it.

We are living through the most rapid period of change in human history. That is not opinion. It is fact.

Technology is dehumanising daily life at pace. Human interaction is being quietly designed out of ordinary life - in banking, in law, in medicine, in almost every profession you can name.

And yet humans need humans. Not as a preference. As a requirement.

Newton's Third Law tells us that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. If technology is removing connection from the world, connection becomes more valuable. The demand for genuine human experience does not disappear. It intensifies.

That is where hospitality lives. Hospitality is the how-you-make-me-feel profession. In a frictionless world, people pay for how they feel. In a digital world, human moments come at a premium.

And here is what almost nobody is saying out loud yet: as AI reshapes the legal profession, the medical profession and dozens of others, the talent pool available is about to grow dramatically. Ambitious, capable, emotionally intelligent people will be looking for a profession with a human future.

Hospitality is that profession.

Why now? Why this book? Why you?

Growing talent pool

As AI disrupts other professions, hospitality stands to attract the most talented generation of professionals in its history.

Hospitality is human

Care, judgement, presence and connection cannot be automated, replicated or replaced.

A book you don’t just read, you use!

At the heart of this book sits a mindset and skillset scorecard, a practical self-evaluation tool available both within the book and as a digital download. It enables every reader to honestly assess where they are, identify what they want to develop, and take purposeful steps forward.

Alongside the scorecard, twenty real hospitality professionals share their own stories: the mindsets they cultivated, the skills they built and the decisions that turned a job into a career they are proud of.

Together, they make this an invaluable guide for anyone in hospitality who wants to invest in themselves, perform at their best, and enjoy what they do even more.

Loved Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara?

You will find a kindred spirit here.

Both books share the same conviction: that hospitality, practised with intention, is one of the most powerful forces in human life. Unreasonable Hospitality tells the story of what is possible using the example of one extraordinary restaurant.

HOSPITALITY A Profession, Not an Industry gives every person in the profession, the language, mindset and tools to live that belief in their own career.

What’s inside

Seven chapters that change how you see yourself and the profession you have chosen.

Why This Matters
If we help people see hospitality as a profession and not an industry, the message will travel. It will strengthen cultures, shape careers, and give the people of hospitality the pride, clarity and belief they deserve.

Chapter 1

Exciting Times - Why Hospitality is Entering a Golden Era

Change is exponential. Technology is dehumanising. And the equal and opposite reaction is already underway: people are seeking out the places that restore their humanity. Meanwhile, as AI disrupts profession after profession, the talent available to hospitality is about to grow like never before. This chapter shows why hospitality's moment has never been greater or more consequential.

Chapter 2

The Right Word - Why Hospitality is a Profession, Not an Industry!

Words shape mindset. Mindset drives action. Treat hospitality as an industry and what you offer becomes transactional and replaceable. Treat it as a profession and it becomes meaningful, respected and future-proof. This is the chapter that changes the conversation - and the career.

Chapter 3

Vows and Bonds - Why Service is Noble

Noble service in front of the house begins with noble conditions behind it. Belonging. Purpose. Pride. Shared identity. And a culture that is led from the top, not delegated to HR. This chapter explores what it takes to build the conditions in which people genuinely want to give their best.

Chapter 4

A Better Everybody - Why Hospitality is the Creative Career of Choice

In most professions, rewards are deferred until seniority. Hospitality is different. You can feel the impact of what you do from your very first shift. This chapter makes the case that hospitality is not a stepping stone: it is a destination worth choosing.

Chapter 5

Mindsets and Skillsets

The attitudes and abilities that predict success in hospitality - identified not as theory, but as behaviours you can spot, practise and build on every single shift. Mindset is the engine. Skillset is the steering wheel. You need both to drive well.

Chapter 6

Real Life - Hospitality Stories

Twenty hospitality professionals share their journeys: from first jobs to fulfilling careers. Honest, inspiring and full of the kind of wisdom that only comes from lived experience, alongside the scorecard to help you apply their lessons to your own.

Chapter 7

Endgame - Practice, Reflection and Growth

Everything pulled together into a practical framework you can use, return to and build on - whatever stage of your career you are at.

About Stefan

I have spent three decades as an entrepreneur, coach and strategist - working across 70 sectors and 17 countries, with over 500 businesses ranging from founder-led companies to global groups. Throughout that journey, a particular focus has always been the hospitality sector, where I have had the privilege of working with some of the world's leading hospitality brands and membership organisations, and of being appointed as People and Culture Partner and Advisor to many of them.

Seeing the way the world is moving, hospitality has become my main area of focus. I believe it offers incredible opportunity and potential in an increasingly technology-driven world where human connection is at a premium. In this profession, culture is not a support function. It is the product.

The research behind this book draws on more than 24,000 culture assessments and over 2 million employee comments from within the sector. I have seen, at scale, what hospitality people are capable of when they are given the right belief, the right language and the right tools.

I wrote this book because I believe hospitality is entering its golden era. And I wanted the people who make it what it is to know that - and to feel it.

About John Mitchinson

This book was brought to life in partnership with John Mitchinson - a bestselling author, award-winning podcaster and one of the most respected figures in British publishing. John was the original head of marketing for Waterstone and has led major book publishing companies.

He brings rare and deep knowledge of what makes a book genuinely compelling to read. His role was to take Stefan's three decades of insight, research and lived experience, and shape it into the book you now hold.

What hospitality leaders say about Stefan's work

It was a pleasure to have you attend and speak at the Virtuoso Symposium in Dubai. Your personal reputation was amplified globally due to the quality of your presentation. Your delivery was excellent and resonated deeply with our attendees, many of whom are senior leaders of significant businesses.

I’m a huge fan of how you make culture easy to understand, measure and improve, and Empowered is a key asset for us at Virtuoso. I can wholeheartedly recommend you as a speaker. I will also continue to extol the virtues of Empowered to all the hospitality leaders I know who appreciate the importance of culture!

Matthew Upchurch, Chairman & CEO, Virtuoso

Working with Stefan has been one of the most impactful leadership experiences we’ve delivered within our organisation. Over three days, he guided us on a journey that brought clarity, connection, and helped us craft a vision, values, purpose, and mission for four hotels.

Stefan has a rare ability to simplify complex ideas, create psychological safety and inspire meaningful reflection, while still keeping the sessions engaging, practical and enjoyable. His humour, storytelling and deep respect for the hospitality profession made the experience not just insightful, but memorable.

If an organisation is serious about becoming a place where people feel proud to belong, where culture isn’t a poster but a lived experience, then engaging Stefan is not a decision to deliberate for long. It is one you will look back on as a pivotal turning point.

On behalf of our leadership team, thank you, Stefan, not only for your expertise but also for the humanity and care you bring to your work. We look forward to continuing this journey with you.

Michael Jacobi, Managing Director, The Scally Collection

We have had the privilege of engaging Stefan to deliver several keynotes for us over the years, and his contribution has been consistently exceptional. He articulates the essence of culture with clarity and precision, and his sessions are invariably insightful, thought-provoking, and highly relevant to the hospitality profession.

Kalindi Juneja, CEO, PoB Hotels

Your coaching workshop was exceptional, with many attendees describing it as life-changing. I am confident that it will have a lasting impact on performance and culture across the organisation.

Brent Cross, President & General Manager, Gasparilla Inn
